No plans to cut drink-drive limit

The government has dismissed reports it is planning to reduce the drink drive limit in England and Wales. Road safety minister Andrew Jones said ” we have no plans to change the drink drive limit. There is no review. The government believes rigorous enforcement and serious penalties for drink drivers are a more effective deterrent than changing the drink drive limit.”

According to reports, Mr Jones was to hold talks with his Scottish counterpart after the legal limit north of the border was cut to less than one glass of wine. Responding to a parliamentary question, he holds MPs: ” I am intending to discuss with the Scottish minister the experience of the lower limit in Scotland and the timescales to get access to robust evidence of the road safety impact.”

The number of drink drive offences in Scotland fell by around 12% in the year after the change from 4,208 to 3,682, according to police figures. It is not possible to say how much alcohol a person can drink and stay below the limit.
