Useful information on insurance and convictions

Getting insurance is not always a straightforward experience if you have convictions or an adverse record, below we give a few pointers on what you need to know.

Why is it hard to find insurance with convictions?

Within the insurance arena, motor convictions have always received a bad rep. Insurers are very quick to labelise and stereotype about a driver’s behaviour. You may have been caught drink driving and it was a life changing event – but all the insurer sees is a DR10 conviction on your record.

The truth is most insurers are interested in safe insurance risks. If you have a motor conviction – particularly a serious one like a DR10, IN10, DD10 or TT99 – the majority of insurers will either not quote or charge you an extortionate price. The only option, unless you want to pay over the odds, is to shop around for your convicted driver insurance.

Comparison sites aren’t always the answer

It’s a common setiment that the cheapest and most convenient way to find cheap car, bike or van insurance is on a comparison site. Well this isn’t always true, especially if you have motor endorsements on your licence. The reality is insurers need to ask more questions, when it comes to convictions, than you can ask on an online website. To benefit from the cheapest insurance possible with convictions, the quote process takes a little longer when it’s done properly.

When you visit a comparison site and enter a motor conviction, one of two things usually happens at the result page. Very few companies quote and/or when you contact them they will change the price and charge you even more! It’s quite a deceiving process.

We recommend that you speak to a specialist who can understand your needs and contact enough insurers, with proven track records, to negotiate you the best rates. That’s our approach anyway – we’ll do all the hard work for you and pressure our insurers to get you the best rates.

How long do convictions stay on your licence?

Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a conviction is spent after five years. After this time it does not need to be disclosed.

For more information on this, you can visit the DVLA’s website.
