Scientists have developed wearable technology that simulates the effects of illegal drugs on the body, in an effort to teach young drivers about the dangers of getting behind the wheel whilst high. Developed by Ford, the suit includes goggles that blur the vision, headphones that play distracting noises, a vibrating wrist band, a neck brace, elbow and knee straps, and a weight around the left ankle.

As many as 6000 young drivers will have the opportunity to drive a car whilst wearing the suit as part of driving courses ran by Ford. They will see how recreational drugs such as Cocaine and Cannabis can slow reaction times and effect co-ordination and concentration.

One of the young drivers taking part in the course, Dean Parkhurst, 18 said “everything was a distraction – all the different things on different parts of my body were distracting me from looking where I was going.” Shortly after mowing down countless road cones. “Now I know how little you concentrate on driving when you have all these different symptoms resulting from being high.”

Money and time mean this training is unlikely to become compulsory but Ford believes it only a small percentage of drivers realise the effects and then pass on this information to their peers then the roads will be a safer place. It is thought illegal drugs may be a factor in as many as 200 road deaths every year in the UK, and driving under the influence makes drivers 30 times more likely to crash.
