Driving without a licence
Under section 87 (1) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to drive a vehicle without a licence appropriate to a vehicle of that class or to drive a vehicle on a provisional licence unless accompanied by an appropriate person and displaying ‘L’ plates on your vehicle. An ‘appropriate’ person is a full licence holder who is over the age of 21 and has held a full driving licence for at least 3 years.
If a driver is convicted of driving without a licence they will face 3-6 penalty points and can be fined upto £1000. The courts also have the power to disqualify such a driver from holding or obtaining a licence for a period of time. The vehicle will also be seized.
Driving a vehicle without an appropriate licence will render almost any insurance policy invalid and those charged with driving without a licence will inevitably face charges of driving without insurance aswell.
