Car and Van Insurance with a DR20
What is a DR20 driving conviction and why can’t you find affordable motor insurance?
First of all a DR20 is defined as ‘driving or attempting to drive while unfit through drink’. This motor endorsement carries between three and 11 penalty points depending on the severity of the incident and the level of intoxication of the driver. This type of driving conviction stays on one’s licence for 11 years and must be disclosed to insurers until this time period has elapsed.
If a driver receives 12 or more penalty points within a three year period this will lead to a TT99 conviction which means totting up and leads to a ban from driving for a period of time. The driver will then need to retake practical and theory driving tests.
Many insurers will stear clear of drivers with a DR20, those that will quote charge a greatly inflated insurance premium. Insurers believe that drivers with a serious motor conviction present more of a ‘moral hazard’ and are likely to make a similar mistake again and have a claim. What they don’t consider in their one dimensional veiw point is that people can learn from their mistakes making it LESS likely for a similar mistake to occur again in the future!
Drink or drugs motor convictions
Within this category of endorsements, conviction codes DR10 through DR61 stay on your licence for 11 years. These convictions include: DR10 (driving or attempting to drive with alcohol level above limit), DR30 (driving or attempting to drive then failing to supply a specimen for analysis), DR31 (driving or attempting to drive then refusing to give permission for analysis of a blood sample that was taken without consent due to incapacity), DR61 (defusing to give permission for analysis of a blood sample that was taken without consent due to incapacity in circumstances other than driving or attempting to drive) and DR80 (driving or attempting to drive when unfit through drugs).
The above convictions stay on the licence for 11 years, wheras the other drink or drug convictions stay on the licence for four years: DR40 (in charge of a vehicle while alcohol level above limit), DR50 (in charge of a vehicle while unfit through drink), DR60 (failure to provide a specimen for analysis in circumstances other than driving or attempting to drive), DR70 (failing to provide specimen for breath test) and DR90 (in charge of a vehicle when unfit through drugs)
