Car and Van Insurance With a DD90

What is a DD90 and how can you find cheap convicted driver insurance?

A DD90 is handed to drivers guilt of ‘furious driving’ and comes with between 3 and 9 penalty points depending upon the severity. The conviction code stays on your licence for four years and falls under the dangerous/reckless driving category of motoring offences.

During the four year period you will still need to disclose the motor endorsement to your insurer, however under the rules once the four years has elapsed you no longer need to mention this. If you fail to mention it within the period it will probably lead to your insurance being void, your insurer won’t pay any claims, and you may find the insurer keeps any money you paid.

If you’ve got existing penalty points, and the points from the DD90 takes you over 12 points in total, accumulated within three years, then this will lead to a totting up ban – TT99 – which means a disqualification for a specified period, where you can’t return to driving until you’ve retaken your tests.

Following a DD90 you will find insurance alot more expensive than it was previously and also harder to get hold of with many insurers refusing to quote. This is because insurers believe drivers with more serious convictions such as a DD90 and related offences, pose more risk. Insurers are in the business to avoid claims – they hope to take your money and never pay out, so if the perceived risk is higher so will be the cost of the insurance.

This is not a fair stance though since not all drivers are the same and you can learn from your mistakes and not make the same mistake again. Fortunately there are a few insurers out there who take a less one dimensional approach and can provide fair priced insurance.
