Car and Van Insurance with a DD40
What is a DD40 motor conviction for and why do insurers not like to insure it?
A DD40 driving endorsement literally means ‘driving in a dangerous manner at a dangerous speed or recklessly’. The penalty points stay on your licence for up to four years, after this point they no longer need to be disclosed. If you accumulate more than 12 penalty points within a three year period you will be disqualified under the ‘totting up’ rules. This is displayed on your licence as TOT UP.
Many insurers either won’t provide insurance for a DD40 and related convictions, or will charge a drastically increased amount for the priviledge. The general feeling is that drivers with such motor convictions are more likely to make a similar mistake again in the future and the chances of a claim occuring are higher than drivers without a DD40. This logic doesn’t consider how a driver can learn from their mistakes and become reformed. Unfortunately much of the motor insurance market has a one dimensional view…
Reckless/dangerous driving convictions
A DD40 falls under the reckless/dangerous driving convictions category. These convictions carry somewhere between three and 11 points depending on the severity and repercussions of the dangerous driving. Other convictions within this category include: DD10 (causing serious injury by dangerous driving), DD60 (Manslaughter or culpable homicide while driving a vehicle), DD80 (causing death by dangerous driving) and DD90 (furious driving).
