Driving on the phone
It is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone when driving. This includes using your phone to follow a map, read a text or check social media. This applies even if you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic. The only time you can use your phone whilst driving is to call 999 in an emergency and it is unsafe or impractical to stop. You may use a hands free phone while driving but you can still be prosecuted if you’re not in proper control of your vehicle. The penalties are the same as being caught using a hand held mobile phone.
If you’re caught using a handheld phone whilst driving, you’ll get 3 penalty points in your licence and a fine of up to £100. Points on your licence will result in higher insurance premiums. The penalties for driving carelessly or dangerously when using a phone can include disqualification, a large fine and up to 2 years inprisonment.
• Texting makes a crash up to 23 times more likely.
• 5 seconds is the minimal amount of attention that a driver who texts takes away from the road. If travelling at 55mph, this equals driving the length of a football field without looking at the road.
• Teens who text whilst driving spend 10% of the time outside of their lane.
• 19% of surveyed drivers of all ages admit to surfing the web whilst driving.
