Drug driving

This year new regulations aimed at stopping people driving while on drugs have come into force across England and Wales. For the first time police have been able to use new ‘drugslyser’ devices at the roadside.

The new regulations set low levels for 8 illegal drugs, with higher levels set for 8 prescription drugs, including morphine and methadone. The so called ‘drugalysers’ will only be able to screen for cannabis and cocaine at the roadside for the time being. New devices that can test for a greater number of drugs at the roadside will be developed in the future.

David Taylor professor of psycho-pharmacology at Kings College said, “any exposure would render people over the limit and would leave them over the limit for upto 36 hours”. A government road safety THINK campaign has also been launched to coincide with the new legislation.
